Zinc-The mineral element zinc is found in very quantities in the eye. It may be used for a metabolic process in the retina. The research does suggest that zinc deficiencies contribute to retinal breakdown and that zinc supplementation can slow macular degeneration. The recommended dosage is approximately 80 milligrams of zinc oxide daily. Copper-This should be part of the supplementation process to offset the copper deficiencies that increased zinc intake can produce. The recommended macular degeneration treatments dosage is 2 milligrams daily of cupric oxide. Beta Carotene-Beta carotene is a vitamin A precursor. It serves as another means of slowing the oxidation process in the eye. Studies suggest that those who take in beta carotene in their diet regularly are less prone to macular degeneration. The recommended daily dose is 15 milligrams of beta carotene. Beta carotene may not be appropriate in these doses for smokers or former smokers as there has been a link between beta carotene and lung cancer.
